This painting started as I wandered around one of my favourite greengrocers. My wife walked up with with a smile on her face and a big beautiful lemon with fresh leaves in her hand. I just had to buy 4 of them and I knew that my next painting would have them as the focal point.
The pewter goblet just popped right in there, a lovely silver neutrality amongst the golden yellows. The wine bottle created a bit of height that I liked. I kept it simple by keeping it part of the dark background.
I decided to leave the grapes in an unfinished or loose state so that the eye skips past them on the way to the main focus and yet still holds enough interest
to bring the viewer back to maybe ask some questions or to let their mind finish them off.
And finally, the basket created a shape that encompasses rthe focal point with just a bit of light hitting the left hand side. I made the this basket whilst on a bushcraft course somewhere in a forest in Oxfordshire.
